Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been exploring different positive psychology strategies for shifting what we bring into our workday.
From bringing your softer side (pup vibes), to how something as simple as a smile can change what we bring into a room.
Today, I’m continuing that theme with something we all have with us, all the time.
Our five senses.
It’s human nature for our minds to race ahead when things get intense. Psychologists often use grounding techniques that engage our five senses to help bring our attention back to the present moment.
So, pause for a moment and ask yourself:
What do I see?
Find something beautiful. The changing colors of the leaves. Flowers.
What do I hear?
The sounds around you. Maybe some calming music.
What do I smell?
Fresh air. Coffee. Fall. Perhaps even pumpkin spice.
What do I feel?
Your feet grounded on the floor. The heat of your coffee mug.
What do I taste?
A sip of coffee. A piece of fruit. Whatever is right in front of you.
I’ve been trying this myself, and I’m finding that taking a moment to really notice what I can see, hear, smell, feel and taste helps bring me back to the present.
This also has come up in my coaching sessions when exploring simple, practical strategies that can create a little more calm, clarity and space in the middle of a hectic day.
It takes less than a minute.
Our senses are always with us. We just have to pause long enough to notice them.
What about you?
What helps bring you back to the present moment?
