This guy turned 12 last week.
His name is Oscar.
I can’t describe the joy he has brought to our family, and especially to me.
Anyone who has a dog might know what I mean.
Oscar brings out the most exuberant version of me.
I use ridiculous voices. I make up words. We have full-on conversations.
There have been times I’m on a call working from home and suddenly wonder:
Wait. Am I on mute?
Because I’m talking to Oscar in a way I would be slightly mortified for my colleagues to hear.
And then I started thinking…
Why shouldn’t we bring some of those puppy vibes to work?
That version of us that is a little softer.
A little more playful.
A little more loving.
A little more exuberantly happy.
Oscar somehow softens my edges.
Last week I talked about what happens when we smile, how serotonin goes up and stress hormones come down. I think Oscar does something very similar for me.
It’s natural. It’s almost invisible.
But I’m different when I’m around him.
Softer. Happier. More loving. More me.
So maybe the question is:
What brings out your puppy vibes?
What helps you show up as the softer, happier, more fully alive version of yourself?
And what would it look like to bring a little more of that to work?
